Kathryn Artemas and Katerina Rallis Awarded Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarships
On Sunday, May 24, Kathryn Artemas and Katerina Rallis became the third group of recipients of the Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarship. Artemas and Rallis, both well deserving students, each received a $1,000.00 scholarship from Chicago AHEPA Chapter #260.
Brother Nicholas Bobis, a member of the Chapter’s Scholarship Selection Committee, announced the names of the award recipients immediately following the Divine Liturgy at Sts. Constantine & Helen Church in Palos Hills, Illinois. The memorial Scholarships were presented in connection with the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago’s (www.chicago.goarch.org) 28th annual Junior Olympics (www.stconstantinehelen.org/jrolympics.html), a program that Mr. Economos unselfishly served through his volunteer efforts for many years.
Kathryn Artemas graduated from Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois in May, 2009, where she earned a 4.406 G.P.A. and scored 30 on her ACT. Katie is the managing editor of the Torch (the Glenbrook North High School student newspaper). Her scholastic awards and activities include membership in the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, as well as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), serving as a peer counselor and singing in the school choir. She was on the school Softball team for two years and has participated in many sporting events in the Junior Olympics. Katie is active in her church at Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview, Illinois, as a member of the Youth Group, serving as a Church Usher and as an Epistle reader. She will participate in Project Mexico this summer and has participated many other community activities. Katie will attend the University of Missouri at Columbia and major in Journalism.
Katerina Rallis graduated from Buffalo Grove High School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois in May, 2009, where she earned a GPA of 4.48. Her scholastic awards include membership in the National Honor Society, a National Qualifier in Speech and Acting, and the National Forensics League of Northern Illinois. Katerina’s high school activities include the Speech and Acting Team, the International Thespian Society, Honors Music, and the Improv Club. She also served as a technical and cast member in several school productions. Katerina has received awards in the Diocesan and National Oratorical Festivals and the Orpheus Hellenic Dance Troupe. She is an active member at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, Illinois, and a member of the Byzantine Chanting Choir, a Vacation Church School teacher, and the girl’s basketball team and the Junior Olympics. Katerina is active in Project Mexico and Feed the Hungry and works part time as a pre-school aide. Katerina will attend Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, pursuing a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Theatre.
The Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarship was established in October 2006, by Chicago Chapter #260 of the Order of AHEPA to honor his memory and commemorate the one-year anniversary of his death. Peter, formerly the Director of Business Development and Training for Superior Coffee and Tea Products, formerly a division of Sara Lee Corporation, worked tirelessly to involve Hellenic youth in church related activities while at the same time giving of himself broadly to the community at large through his efforts on behalf various culinary schools and organizations. With tireless energy and extraordinary good humor, he made everyone feel special. His AHEPA Chapter hoped to capture his spirit and perpetuate those special qualities and promote them through this scholarship initiative. The AHEPA Chapter has established the goal of raising $100,000 in order to make the scholarship funds self-sustaining and to award annual scholarships totaling $5,000.
The scholarship is open to high school seniors who are graduating or undergraduate students who are pursuing or will pursue a post-secondary education by attending a vocational, trade or technical school or a college or university. Complete eligibility requirements and a Scholarship application appear on the Scholarship’s website, www.PeterEconomosScholarship.com.
The Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) (www.AHEPA.org) was founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1922 in response to the evils of bigotry and racism that emerged in early 20th century American society. It also helped Greek immigrants assimilate into society. Today, AHEPA brings the ideals of ancient Greece, which includes philanthropy, education, civic responsibility, and family and individual excellence to the community.
