Obama Visits Vatican

Last Friday, President Obama visited the Vatican and spent a half hour with the Pope.

Two months ago, while in Istanbul, our Ecumenical Patriarch traveled to the President's Hotel for a "photo-op" with all the other "minority" religious leaders in Turkey. The President at no time visited the Fanar. He also forgot to visit Greece, as is customary when a U.S. President visits Turkey.

We asked then in a poll that runs down the left side of this page: Is the Obama Administration favoring Turkish Interests over Greek Interests?

Fellow Hellenes, we have a lot of work to do!

Supreme Convention - National Golf Director

As I indicated in an earlier posting, Brother Spiro Siaggas was elected National Athletic Director at the Supreme Convention. The delegates assembled decided not to have the National Athletic Director position be appointed through the Supreme President or the Supreme Lodge, but to continue the prior process of electing such an individual to such a position in the future.

The National Athletic Director does not sit on the Supreme Lodge but is entitled to a "sovereign" vote at Supreme Conventions, and continues to be elected by the delegates.

Appointed as National Golf Director is Brother Chris Atsaves, of our Blue Ribbon District 13. Brother Atsaves will relinquish his position as Regional Director of the AHEPA Midwest Chicago Regional Golf Tournament and will supervise all the regional tournaments as well as the national one. Brother Atsaves will remain in his elected position as Blue Ribbon District 13 Athletic Director.

Supreme Convention - Daughters of Penelope

We are still busy unpacking from the rcently completed and successful Supreme AHEPA Family Convention and hope to update everyone withadditional news as soon as possible.

In San Francisco this year at the Hyatt Regency overlooking the famous Golden Gate Bridge, the AHEPA Family celebrated the 80th Anniversary of the founding of the Daughters of Penelope. The Grand Lodge of the Daughters dedicated this convention to their founder, Sister Alexandra Apostolides Sonenfeld.

The 13th District was well represented by the Daughters of Penelope, who in fact, sent more delegatees to this Convention than the men.

Congratulations to Sister Christine K. Constandine of our 13th District, who was elected by the delegates to serve as Grand Vice-President. It looks like we will soon have another Grand President of the Daughters in the 13th!

Nicholas A. Karacostas Unanimously Elected AHEPA Supreme President

The delegates of the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading association for the nation's three million American citizens of Greek heritage, and countless Philhellenes, unanimously elected Nicholas A. Karacostas their supreme president at its 87th Annual Supreme Convention in San Francisco. Karacostas ran unopposed in elections that were held Saturday, July 4, 2009. He was formally installed as supreme president Sunday.

"Words cannot express how humbled and honored I am to be elected AHEPA Supreme President," said Karacostas, who emigrated from Kyrenia, Cyprus as a three-year-old with his family. "It is the culmination of 30 years of service to the organization, dating back to my membership in the Sons of Pericles."

He continued, "I look forward to working with our new Supreme Lodge, and entire membership, to keep AHEPA on the steady path set forth by my predecessors. There are many challenges facing the community, and new ones will emerge. However, I'm confident we will strive to overcome them together in true spirit to our mission."

He is a member of the American Bar Association, the New York Bar Association, and National Institute for Trial Advocacy. Karacostas received his J.D. from the City of New York Law School and is a graduate of New York University.

Karacostas has served on the Parish Council of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Flushing, N.Y., for six years. Also, he is a legal advisor to the Pancyprian Association of America Inc., and serves on the Board of Directors of HANAC, Inc. and St. Michael's Home.

One Vote

Our favorite son candidate for National AHEPAN of the Year, Brother Chris Atsaves, came up one vote short in being named National AHEPAN of the Year.

One vote.

Brother Chris Atsaves deserves our congratulations this year along with being named Blue Ribbon District 13 AHEPAN of the Year and North Shore Chapter 94 AHEPAN of the Year.

Next year, let's try to get ALL chapters in our District to nominate one of their members as AHEPAN of the Year!

Brother John Galanis Elected to Board of Trustees

Our very own 13th Blue Ribbon District, Past District Governor, Brother John Galanis, was elected by the delegates of the Supreme Convention, to serve as a member of the Board of Trustees. Brother Galanis was elected to serve AHEPA in such a capacity by an over two to one margin. Brother Galanis joins Brother Frank Manios, who was re-elected to the Board of Trustees, and who is currently serving as Chairman.

Brother Tom Gober, of Hoosier District 12, was reelected as Supreme Governor of Region 6, which includes the 13th District. The Brothers in the 13th District unanimously supported Brother Gober, who was unopposed.

Brother Galanis joins Vasilios Albanos, also from our 13th District, who is continuing to serve out his term on the Board of Auditors.

Also elected to the Supreme Lodge were the following Brothers from across the nation:

Brother Nicholas A. Karacostas, Supreme President
Brother Dr. John Grossomanides, Supreme Vice-President
Brother Nick Aroutzides, Canadian President
Brother Anthony Kouzounis, Supreme Secretary
Brother Col. Nicholas Vamvakias, Supreme Treasurer
Brother Tassos Konstantin, Supreme Counselor
Brother Spiro Siaggas, Supreme Athletic Director

Supreme Governors and their zones elected are as follows: (1) Sergis, (2) Mesogitis, (3) Manolios, (4) Georvas, (5) Kontos, (6) Gober, (7) Perros, (8) Booras.

Legislative issues voted by the delegates included (1) pushing the date of the Supreme Convention back from the week of July that includes the 4th of July Holiday, to commence in 2011, (2) Limiting the elections of Supreme Governors from a District to two years within a zone, and (3) requiring Chapters to appoint a Communications Director who is internet savvy. Legislative issues (1) and (3) were those proposed by the 13th Blue Ribbon District at our recently concluded District Convention.

The Legislative issue that was defeated was a proposal to allow any AHEPAN who has been a member in good standing for 6 months to be a delegate to the Supreme Convention, if they show up and register as one in a timely fashion during the convention.

AHEPA Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarships

Kathryn Artemas and Katerina Rallis Awarded Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarships

On Sunday, May 24, Kathryn Artemas and Katerina Rallis became the third group of recipients of the Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarship. Artemas and Rallis, both well deserving students, each received a $1,000.00 scholarship from Chicago AHEPA Chapter #260.

Brother Nicholas Bobis, a member of the Chapter’s Scholarship Selection Committee, announced the names of the award recipients immediately following the Divine Liturgy at Sts. Constantine & Helen Church in Palos Hills, Illinois. The memorial Scholarships were presented in connection with the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of Chicago’s (www.chicago.goarch.org) 28th annual Junior Olympics (www.stconstantinehelen.org/jrolympics.html), a program that Mr. Economos unselfishly served through his volunteer efforts for many years.

Kathryn Artemas graduated from Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois in May, 2009, where she earned a 4.406 G.P.A. and scored 30 on her ACT. Katie is the managing editor of the Torch (the Glenbrook North High School student newspaper). Her scholastic awards and activities include membership in the National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society, as well as Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), serving as a peer counselor and singing in the school choir. She was on the school Softball team for two years and has participated in many sporting events in the Junior Olympics. Katie is active in her church at Sts. Peter & Paul Greek Orthodox Church in Glenview, Illinois, as a member of the Youth Group, serving as a Church Usher and as an Epistle reader. She will participate in Project Mexico this summer and has participated many other community activities. Katie will attend the University of Missouri at Columbia and major in Journalism.

Katerina Rallis graduated from Buffalo Grove High School in Buffalo Grove, Illinois in May, 2009, where she earned a GPA of 4.48. Her scholastic awards include membership in the National Honor Society, a National Qualifier in Speech and Acting, and the National Forensics League of Northern Illinois. Katerina’s high school activities include the Speech and Acting Team, the International Thespian Society, Honors Music, and the Improv Club. She also served as a technical and cast member in several school productions. Katerina has received awards in the Diocesan and National Oratorical Festivals and the Orpheus Hellenic Dance Troupe. She is an active member at St. John’s Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, Illinois, and a member of the Byzantine Chanting Choir, a Vacation Church School teacher, and the girl’s basketball team and the Junior Olympics. Katerina is active in Project Mexico and Feed the Hungry and works part time as a pre-school aide. Katerina will attend Elmhurst College in Elmhurst, Illinois, pursuing a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Theatre.

The Peter J. Economos Memorial Scholarship was established in October 2006, by Chicago Chapter #260 of the Order of AHEPA to honor his memory and commemorate the one-year anniversary of his death. Peter, formerly the Director of Business Development and Training for Superior Coffee and Tea Products, formerly a division of Sara Lee Corporation, worked tirelessly to involve Hellenic youth in church related activities while at the same time giving of himself broadly to the community at large through his efforts on behalf various culinary schools and organizations. With tireless energy and extraordinary good humor, he made everyone feel special. His AHEPA Chapter hoped to capture his spirit and perpetuate those special qualities and promote them through this scholarship initiative. The AHEPA Chapter has established the goal of raising $100,000 in order to make the scholarship funds self-sustaining and to award annual scholarships totaling $5,000.

The scholarship is open to high school seniors who are graduating or undergraduate students who are pursuing or will pursue a post-secondary education by attending a vocational, trade or technical school or a college or university. Complete eligibility requirements and a Scholarship application appear on the Scholarship’s website, www.PeterEconomosScholarship.com.

The Order of AHEPA (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) (www.AHEPA.org) was founded in Atlanta, Georgia in 1922 in response to the evils of bigotry and racism that emerged in early 20th century American society. It also helped Greek immigrants assimilate into society. Today, AHEPA brings the ideals of ancient Greece, which includes philanthropy, education, civic responsibility, and family and individual excellence to the community.

9th Annual AHEPA Midwest Regional Golf Tournament Photographs

We have received many photographs from one of our roving AHEPA photographers, Sister Caroline Panagopoulos of the Daughters of Penelope. These are but two of the many photographs she submitted that were taken at our recently concluded 9th Annual Midwest Regional Golf Tournament at Geneva National, Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. Many thanks to Sister Caroline for her outstanding efforts!

Brother Chris Atsaves, Midwest Regional Golf Tournament Director and Blue Ribbon District 13 Athletic Director, received from Brother Spiro Siaggas, our National Athletic Director, the National AHEPA Athletic Outstanding Service Award. Pictured from left to right are Brother Louis Geo. Atsaves, 13th District Governor, Brother Spiro Siaggas, Brother Chris Atsaves, and Brother John Galanas, AHEPA Supreme Counselor and sole representative golfer from the State of Wisconsin.

Midwest Regional Golf Tournament Director Brother Chris Atsaves presents Brother Randy Pavlatos with an award as one of the best golfers of the tournament. Brother Pavlatos is the current Treasurer of North Shore Chapter 94.

Although the weatherman threatened rain, we were blessed with a cool and sunny day that was just perfect for golf!

(A hat tip to Brother Siaggas for pointing out a correction that needed to be made to this article. The article is now corrected.)

New Poll

On the left hand column of this site, you see four polls of various issues that many have responded to. These polls have been running for quite some time and will be soon taken down and replaced with new ones. A final report will be made of all poll results. Please remember that these polls are informal and highly unscientific, but remember as well that even the most scientific and best polling can also be in error!

What other issues do you wish to float out here in the internet world concerning our Order of AHEPA? Will it fly or crash like a lead balloon?

E-Mail us at ahepaatsaves@aol.com or post a comment here with your thoughts.

In the meantime, check out the new poll about our Sons of Pericles and Maids of Athena.

Ancient Wisdom!

According to the ancient tribal wisdom of the Dakota Indians, passed on from generation to generation, when you discover you're riding a dead horse, your best move is to dismount.

However, many of us in today's government and business world seem reluctant to acknowledge that our plans and strategies aren't working. Instead of dismounting, we try a variety of tactics in an attempt to breathe some life into those dead horses, including the following:
  1. Buying a stronger whip.
  2. Changing riders.
  3. Threatening the horse with termination.
  4. Appointing a committee to study the horse.
  5. Visiting other sites to see how they ride dead horses.
  6. Lowering the standards to include dead horses.
  7. Reclassifying the dead horse as "living-impaired."
  8. Hiring outside contractors to ride the dead horse.
  9. Harnessing several dead horses together to increase speed.
  10. Providing additional funding and/or training to increase the dead horse's performance.
  11. Doing a productivity study to see if lighter riders would improve the dead horse's performance.
  12. Declaring that the dead horse requires less overhead and therefore contributes more to the bottom line.
  13. Rewriting the expected performance requirements for all horses.
  14. Promoting the dead horse to management.

District Lt. Governor Report: District 13 Convention

Blue Ribbon District 13
Order of AHEPA
District Lt. Governor Report

Dear Brothers,

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the District 13th Lt. Governor for this past year. This term has been educating and very enlightening.

I am pleased that the District Lodge this year took the initiative to hold multiple meetings between our Lodge and the District Lodge of the Daughters of Penelope. These meetings were very constructive and productive in resolving disputes from the past. We are now working more closely together to ensure more favorable results. Over the course of these meetings, our relationship with the Daughters has developed to be trustworthy and moving in the right direction.

There was no AHEPA Herald in your mailboxes. Thanks to our Governor this year, the AHEPA Herald became a full time blog site (www.ahepae-herald.com) where daily up to the minute news and comments are posted at no cost. We will focus on getting an issue out by the fall time frame.

In order to stay informed with all the different events of the Chapters, it is imperative that the District Lodge as well as the rest of the Chapters receive this information. Thus far, we only get limited information from the chapters. Please incorporate the Secretaries and Presidents on your mailing list -- this will advertise, inform and assist in the participation of your events.

In have made visitations to the following chapters: Garfield, Oak Lawn-Englewood and Woodlawn, as well as participated in numerous chapter events.

Fraternally,

Angelo Versis
Blue Ribbon District 13
Lt. Governor

District Treasurer Report: District 13 Convention

Blue Ribbon District 13
Order of AHEPA
District Treasurer Report

Dear Brothers,

Once again I had the honor and privilege of serving on the District Lodge and this represents my second year as treasurer. My job is to record all transactions and keep a budget.

I had surgery in November and was away from AHEPA from late October until the Mid-Year Conference in January.

I helped with the Mid-Year Dinner. I attended meetings with the Daughters on convention matters. I worked on the Sports Awards Banquet with Brother Chris Atsaves and Brother Frank Korbos. I helped brother Frank Korbos and the Woodlawn Chapter at this year's convention. I attended the 13th District Scholarship Foundation Dinner and was asked to award our Oak Lawn-Englewood Chapter Scholarship in memory of Brother Bill Kamberos, who passed away in December. Brother Bill was a Past District Governor and long time member of the Scholarship Committee.

I hope to continue to serve on the District Lodge.
Thank you.

Fraternally submitted,

Nick C. Lamnatos
District 13 Treasurer
